Roblox Studio

What Is Roblox Studio?

2 min read Updated

Roblox Studio is the official editor Roblox provides for free to anyone with a Roblox account. Every game on the platform is built in Studio. It runs on Windows and Mac and includes a 3D editor, a physics engine, a scripting environment in Lua, and one-click publishing.

What you can build

Pretty much any 3D experience you can imagine: obstacle courses, simulators, RPGs, racing games, roleplay worlds, horror games, tycoons. Studio also supports basic 2D UI, sound, and online multiplayer out of the box.

Who uses it

From kids learning their first scripting language to professional studios employing dozens of developers. The barrier to entry is genuinely low — you can publish a working game in an afternoon with no prior programming experience by using templates.

What's inside Studio

  • A 3D viewport for placing and editing parts and models.
  • An Asset Manager and Toolbox for free models, sounds, and meshes.
  • A Script Editor for writing Lua code.
  • An Output window for debugging.
  • A Test mode to playtest your game without publishing.
  • Publish-to-Roblox to push your game live with one click.

Cost

Studio is free. You only pay (in Robux) for premium assets or specific upload allowances. Publishing a game is free.
