If Roblox refuses to open, the cause is almost always one of a small handful of things: a stuck background process, a broken installation, a network block, or an outdated client. Work through the steps below in order — most people are back in the game within five minutes.
Start with the basics
Before changing any settings, do the boring stuff first. These three steps fix the launch problem for most players.
- Close every Roblox window and the Roblox Player in the system tray, then try again.
- Reboot your device. A full restart clears stuck processes and frees the network ports Roblox uses.
- Open Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac), find RobloxPlayerBeta or Roblox, and end any leftover processes before relaunching.
Re-launch from the website, not the desktop icon
The Roblox desktop shortcut sometimes points at an old install path. Open your browser, sign in at roblox.com, pick any game, and click the green Play button. The site will hand off to the installed player. If this works but the icon doesn't, delete the shortcut and create a new one from the freshly-installed app.
Check that Roblox isn't being blocked
Security software, school networks, and some VPNs can silently block the Roblox client from starting.
- Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus and try again.
- Add Roblox to your firewall allow-list (Windows Security → Firewall → Allow an app).
- Disconnect from VPNs and proxies before launching.
- On school or work Wi-Fi, switch to mobile data — managed networks often block game ports.
Update Windows, macOS, or your phone
Roblox needs an up-to-date operating system. Install pending updates, reboot, and try again. On older Macs and Windows 7, support has ended — you'll need a supported OS.
Reinstall Roblox cleanly
A corrupted install is the most common cause when the app starts and immediately closes.
- Uninstall Roblox from Settings → Apps (Windows) or by dragging it to Trash (Mac).
- Delete the Roblox folder under %LocalAppData% on Windows, or ~/Library/Roblox on Mac.
- Reboot, then reinstall by clicking Play on any game at roblox.com.
When it's a Roblox-side outage
If none of the above works, check status.roblox.com. During platform-wide incidents the client can fail to authenticate and won't open. There's nothing to fix on your end — wait it out.
Common mistakes
- Installing Roblox from an unofficial source — only install from roblox.com or your official app store.
- Running multiple Roblox installs side by side (Microsoft Store + standalone) — keep only one.
- Assuming the desktop shortcut is current after a reinstall.
Troubleshooting tips
- Still failing after a clean reinstall? Create a new Windows user account and try installing from there to rule out a corrupted user profile.
- On Mac, run the installer from Finder rather than directly from the browser download bar.
