Lag in Roblox comes in two flavors: low FPS (the game looks choppy) and high ping (everything feels delayed). They have different causes, so it helps to know which one you're dealing with before you start changing settings.
Tell the difference: FPS lag vs network lag
If the world animates choppily even when you stand still, it's FPS lag — your device can't render fast enough. If movement is smooth but other players teleport or your actions are delayed, it's network lag.
Fix low FPS
Most FPS problems come from graphics settings that are too high for your device, or from background apps stealing resources.
- Open Roblox settings (Esc) → Graphics Mode → Manual, then drag the slider down to 4–6.
- Lower in-game render distance if the game exposes it.
- Close browser tabs, Discord overlays, and recording software while you play.
- On laptops, plug into power — battery mode throttles the GPU.
- Update your graphics drivers from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel's website.
Fix high ping and rubber-banding
Network lag is usually caused by your connection, not Roblox.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to a wired Ethernet connection when possible.
- Reboot your router — uptime of weeks degrades performance.
- Stop large downloads, cloud syncs, and 4K streams on the same network.
- Avoid VPNs unless required; they almost always add latency.
- Try a different game server (some games offer a server browser).
Clear cache and restart
A bloated cache can make Roblox load assets slowly and stutter. Clearing it is safe — Roblox will rebuild it on next launch. See our guide on clearing the Roblox cache.
When lag is the game's fault
Some popular games run hundreds of scripts simultaneously and will lag on any device. Try a lighter game to confirm whether the problem is global or specific to one experience.
Common mistakes
- Setting graphics to maximum on a low-end laptop — auto is rarely the right answer.
- Blaming Roblox for ping issues without testing other online games.
- Running Roblox while a game is updating in the background.
