What Is Roblox?

2 min read Updated

Roblox isn't a single game — it's a platform that hosts millions of games made by other players. Think of it less like Minecraft and more like an app store where every "app" is a game, and most of them are free.

How Roblox works

When you open Roblox you see a list of games (called "experiences"). Each one is built by a developer or a team using Roblox Studio, the free creation tool. You click a game, the assets download, and you're playing inside whatever world that developer built — an obstacle course, a roleplay, a racing game, a simulator, anything.

Roblox is free to download and play. The platform makes money from a virtual currency called Robux that you can spend on cosmetic items, character upgrades inside games, or extra features.

What you can play

There's an enormous range. Some of the most-played categories are obstacle courses (obbies), roleplay games, simulators, story-driven horror, racing, RPGs, tycoons, and anime-inspired fighters. Most are family-friendly, but some games are rated for older audiences — Roblox has an age-rating system to help filter them.

Devices

Roblox runs on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, and Meta Quest. Your account is the same everywhere — sign in on a phone and your friends, avatar, and items all follow you.

Who Roblox is for

Roblox is most popular with players aged 9–16, but plenty of adults play and many parents play alongside their kids. Younger children should play with parental controls enabled — see our parental controls guide.

What Roblox isn't

Roblox isn't a single game with a single story. It isn't owned or made by Microsoft or Minecraft. And it isn't a free-Robux service — anyone offering free Robux is running a scam.
